How to Adjust a Bi-Fold Door On Kitchen Cabinets

Bi-fold cabinet doors make attractive additions to your kitchen, but they can also be an annoyance. End wrestling to open and close your bi-fold door with an easy adjustment. If a bi-fold door often sticks, doesn't close smoothly, scrapes or binds, it's probably out of alignment in the frame. It takes less than 10 minutes to fix the door with only a flat-head or Phillips screwdriver. With periodic maintenance, you're unlikely to experience problems with your bi-fold doors again.

Close the door and look at the top of the track to see how the door lines up with the frame. The door edge and frame will line up parallel on a properly functioning door. If they don't line up properly, you're probably dealing with a loosened top pivot bracket that causes the door to slip out of alignment. Check the inset screw head on the bracket to see what kind of screwdriver you'll need. If the screw head has grooves shaped like a cross, use a Phillips screwdriver. If there is only one slot, use a flat-head screwdriver.

Open the door and with your screwdriver loosen the setscrew slightly. Close the door again and push or pull the top of the closed door to align the edge parallel to the frame.

Close the door and check how it meets with the opposite door. If it's functioning properly, carefully open the door, making sure the pivot doesn't slip. Tighten the setscrew and open and close the door several times to make sure it's still functioning properly. You may need to repeat this process a few times to get it right.

Check the pivot and setscrew at the bottom part of the frame to see if the door binds. If you see a worn edge on the door and scrape marks on the door frame, make some adjustments as you did for the top of the frame. If the bottom pivot loosens and slips, raise the door slightly with your finger to shift the pivot in or out or loosen the setscrew and shift the bracket seat. The method you use depends on the type of hardware used on the door. If the entire bracket comes loose because the mounting screws are stripped broken or missing, you'll need to remove the door to work on it and replace the screws. To remove the door, push down on the spring at the top, lift the door up slightly, and it easily lifts out of the bracket at the bottom for removal.
