How to Fix Holes in Granite Counters

Granite is a durable product, but not completely impenetrable. Lesser quality pieces or countertops and floors subjected to damage are susceptible to minor holes. If left untreated, moisture seeps into the hole, causing it to expand into a serious crack that will eventually create irreparable damage to the piece. Instead of rushing to the phone to hire a professional, repair the minor granite hole yourself before it becomes a major, expensive problem.

Things You'll Need

  • Liquid dish soap
  • 4 cups warm water

Instructions

    • 1

Create a cleaning solution with two to three drops liquid dish soap and 4 cups warm water. Stir the water to create a sudsy mixture.

    • 2

Dampen a soft cloth with the soapy mixture and wipe down the affected granite area to remove any grease, dirt and dust. Rinse the area with a separate damp cloth and dry the surface well to prevent streaks and water marks. Tape off the granite hole with painter’s tape to prevent covering the surrounding surface with epoxy filler.

    • 3

Prepare the epoxy from the granite repair kit according to the package directions. This generally involves mixing the two ingredients, the epoxy and a pigment, to create a color that closely matches your granite.

    • 4

Fill the granite hole with the epoxy using a plastic paint scraper. Holding the scraper at a 30-degree angle, work a small amount of the epoxy into the hole, paying attention to avoid scratching or damaging the granite.

    • 5

Allow the epoxy to cure according to the package directions. The amount of time required is dependent on the room’s temperature and humidity.

    • 6

Dampen a chunk of #0000 steel wool with plain water and gently rub the epoxy-filled hole to remove any excess product.

    • 7

Wipe down the granite countertop with a tack cloth to remove any dust or debris before using or cleaning the granite surface.
