Removing Scratches From Acrylic Kitchen Cabinets

Acrylic panels are a more durable and lightweight alternative to glass for your kitchen cabinets. The material is nonporous, so it resists bacterial growth and won't absorb food smells, and it's easy to maintain. If you notice scratches on your acrylic kitchen cabinets, select products made for acrylic paneling to buff them out and to return your cabinets to their original luster.

Instructions

  1. Fine Scratches

    • 1

Clean the scratched area of the acrylic cabinet panel with a clean, lint-free and nonabrasive cloth, such as a cotton diaper, and a mild acrylic detergent. Wipe the area dry with a piece of clean chamois. Removing any debris first prevents additional damage to your cabinets.

    • 2

Shake the polish for light acrylic scratches well, and apply a small amount to a clean cloth.

    • 3

Saturate the cloth with the polish and rub it firmly back and forth across the surface of the acrylic panel at a right angle to the scratches. Continue, keeping the cloth saturated at all times, until all but the lightest scratches have been buffed out.

    • 4

Buff out remaining scratches by applying the polish to the surface with light pressure and circular strokes. Allow the polish to dry until the surface is slightly hazy. Buff the surface of the acrylic to a high sheen using short, firm strokes with a clean portion of your cloth or a piece of chamois.

    Deep Scratches

    • 5

Clean and dry the surface of the scratched acrylic panel as you would for light scratches. Saturate a clean cloth with a heavy scratch remover for acrylic, and apply the polish liberally with firm back-and-forth strokes perpendicular to the scratches.

    • 6

Continue applying the heavy scratch remover until only fine scratches remain. Buff remaining polish with a clean cloth.

    • 7

Saturate another clean cloth with an acrylic polish for light scratches and apply it in a small, circular motion with light pressure to the entire surface of the panel. Allow the polish to dry.

    • 8

Buff the surface to a sheen with a clean cloth or piece of chamois, removing any remaining polish.
