Sealing Cracked Stoneware

Stoneware is used to create numerous types of home decor pieces, such as tiles and pots. If you notice a crack in your stoneware piece, you should take action immediately to seal the crack before it gets worse, possibly rendering it irreparable. Instead of using glue to attempt to seal the crack, there is another product specifically designed for such a task that will yield a satisfactory result. Proper application of the product, called waterproof silicone caulk, can help you effectively seal the stoneware.

Instructions

    • 1

Dip a clean rag into warm, soapy water. Squeeze out all excess moisture.

    • 2

Clean the area around the crack in the stoneware, using small circular motions to lift up any dust or other buildup .

    • 3

Buff the area dry with a soft cloth.

    • 4

Scrape the crack very lightly with the tip of an exacto knife to clean debris out the crack. Focus on clearing the crack, not making it larger. Wipe the stoneware again with the soft cloth to remove any grit.

    • 5

Brush a thin layer of waterproof silicone caulk over the entire surface of the crack, trying to get the caulk inside the crack if possible.

    • 6

Gently press together the sides around the crack. Hold it this way for two minutes.

    • 7

Allow the waterproof silicone caulk to dry for 24 hours.

    • 8

Scrape away any excess caulk on the surface of the stoneware using the dull edge of the exacto knife.
