How to Fix a Self-Closing Door

Self-closing doors are used in homes to prevent the slamming of doors that can cause damage to the doorjamb and produce loud noises. The hinges of self-closing doors are spring-loaded. When the door closes back on the hinge, the spring takes the weight of the door and slowly reels back into itself. Spring hinges may need adjusting or replacement if the spring is worn out or broken. In most cases, springs are adjustable.

Instructions

  1. Adjusting the Spring

    • 1

Close the door. Insert the tension rod that comes with the door hinge into the hole on the right-hand side of the adjustment slot.

    • 2

Rotate the lever to the left and insert the tension pin in the hole to the right of the lever. Release the lever so the pin can meet the adjustment slot. Remove the lever and adjust the tension. Repeat the steps until the tension is correct.

    • 3

Hit the tension pin with a hammer to make it flush with the hinge tube, once the tension is correct.

    Removing the Hinge

    • 4

Close the door. Use the screwdriver to remove the screws from the hinge where the hinge meets the doorjamb.

    • 5

Pull the door out from the doorjamb.

    • 6

Remove the screws from the hinge on the door side and remove the hinge.
