How to Replace a Schlage Iron Gate Lock

A Schlage brand gate lock makes it easy to control access to fenced-in areas like those around pools and spas. Many municipalities require that you secure a swimming area to prevent young children from entering the area unsupervised. A Schlage iron gate lock automatically latches when the gate is closed, and requires a key for entry. Exiting through the gate is as easy as turning a thumb latch to disengage the lock. If your iron gate is in an unprotected outdoor location, you might need to replace a Schalge iron gate lock when the elements cause it to stop working properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the iron gate by turning the thumb latch or unlocking the lock cylinder with your key.

    • 2

Hold the lock cylinder assembly with one hand to keep it from falling to the ground when you remove the mounting screws. Remove the two Phillips-head screws from the thumb-turn side of the gate lock.

    • 3

Pull the thumb-turn assembly off the gate. Pull the cylinder assembly and trim rings off the gate.

    • 4

Remove the two Phillips-head screws holding the latch to the edge of the gate. Slide the latch out of the hole. Remove the latch plate by taking out the two Phillips-head screws that secure it to the gate jamb.

    • 5

Place a new strike plate on the jamb. Secure it with the included Phillips-head screws.

    • 6

Slide a replacement latch into the hole in the edge of the gate. Make sure the beveled edge of the latch faces the front edge of the strike plate. Install and tighten the two Phillips-head screws to hold the latch in place.

    • 7

Turn the tailpiece on the lock cylinder all the way toward the edge of the gate with the latch installed. Place the cylinder housing through the cylinder collar, then through the cylinder insert. The collar is a metal trim ring that matches the finish of the rest of the lock assembly. The insert is a heavy, unfinished piece of metal that provides support to the lock assembly. Slide the tailpiece through the center of the latch and hold the lock cylinder assembly against the gate.

Turn the thumb latch toward the edge of the gate with the latch in it. Slide the thumb turn over the end of the tailpiece. Insert and tighten the Phillips-head screws to secure the lock assembly to the gate.
