How to Build a Bike Pully

Bike pulleys are devices that provide a convenient way to store bicycles and free up valuable space on the garage floor. By creating a simple pulley system, you can hoist your bicycle up towards the ceiling. This also has the added benefit of making it easier to repair and clean your bike. Normally, you attach a hook to each tire and pull it toward the ceiling. However, when cleaning your bike, attach the pulleys to the frame of the bike; this frees the tires so that you can adjust and clean them freely.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the 2-by-4 on its side so that the 2-inch side is facing up. Drill a hole in the 2-by-4 approximately 2 inches from each end and centered in the middle of the 2-by-4. Drill another set of holes 4 inches from the end of the board. Drill into the board approximately 1/2 inch.

    • 2

Attach the three wood-screw hooks to three of the pulleys. Place the threaded part of the hooks in a vise. Heat the hooks with a torch to soften the metal. Open the hooks with a pair of pliers and attach them to the loop on the top of the pulley.

    • 3

Screw the eye-bolt into a hole you created on one end of the 2-by-4; it doesn't matter which end. Place a screwdriver through the eye of the hook so that it is facing horizontally to the ground. Grab both ends of the screwdriver and start twisting the eye-bolt into the wood.

    • 4

Screw the three hooks that you attached to pulleys into the remaining three holes on the board.

    • 5

Tie a bowline knot with a stopper knot to the first eye hook that doesn't have the pulley attached.

    • 6

Thread the rope through one of the large cup hooks. Leave about 3 feet of space on the rope, then thread the rope through the next pulley along the board. Continue threading to the second hook from the end of the board. Place the rope through the pulley and thread it through the second bike hook. Then, thread through the final pulley near the end of the board.

Attach the board to a solid beam in your garage by first screwing the two brackets onto the end of the board that is opposite the pulleys. Use a screwdriver to screw the bracket in place.

    • 8

Place your bike upside down on the garage floor and attach the two hooks to the wheels. Tighten the slack by pulling on the end of the pulley system that has the rope hanging down. Cut the rope at a distance that makes it comfortable for you to reach.

On the side of the garage, drill a hole for the large hook. Screw the hook into the wall. Pull the rope to raise the bike to the ceiling, attach the end of the rope to the hook and tie it off to keep the bike in place.
