How to Install a Flexible Metalbestos Chimney Liner

If you have a masonry chimney in your home, it is possible for the interior lining to corrode over time. A flexible metal chimney liner helps to prevent corrosion and creosote buildup in the flue. Metalbestos manufactures metal chimney kits that include liners. If you have one of these kits you can install the liner in your chimney yourself. It may require the help of a friend or two, but you won't have to pay a professional.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the coiled liner out on the ground outside. The liner is one piece of the kit, which includes the appliance head, wire mesh and insulation blanket.

    • 2

Remove the adhesive cover from the end of the liner and fit the metal appliance head over the adhesive.

    • 3

Unroll the insulation blanket and place it next to the liner.

    • 4

Place the liner in the middle of the insulation blanket.

    • 5

Apply the included spray adhesive to both the liner and the blanket in 2-foot increments.

    • 6

Put on your work gloves and wrap the blanket tightly around the liner.

    • 7

Tape the seams of the blanket every two feet with 6-inch strips of the included tape.

    • 8

Slide the wire mesh over one end of the liner. Use the included clamp to clamp the end of the mesh to the liner.

    • 9

Pull the mesh to the other end of the liner and use the remaining clamp to secure it.

    • 10

Place a ladder near your roof and have a helper hold the ladder so you can access the roof. Then have the helper hand you the liner.

    • 11

Slide the end of the liner without the appliance head into the chimney. You can have the helper feed the length of liner to you as you insert it into the chimney.

    • 12

Apply a line of caulk around the top of the chimney using the caulking gun.

    • 13

Place the included metal plate over the head of the liner and over the top edge of the chimney with the caulk. Allow the caulk to dry overnight.

    • 14

Insert the included securing screws into the holes in the side of the metal plate. Use your screwdriver to tighten the screws into the plate until they screw into the side of the chimney.
