How to Brace a Worktable

A sturdy worktable, also called a workbench, is a basic and necessary tool in both home and industrial workshops. Because of all the work that is done on top of the table, such as hammering and drilling, as well as the power tools and hand tools that are often stored on it, brace the worktable to ensure that it is strong enough for all the duties you need it for. This helps you avoid damaging the table or even injuring yourself because of a flimsy work surface.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the worktable upside down on the floor.

    • 2

Position a table leg corner brace in the corner underneath the table top, pressed against a table leg and the apron directly beneath the table top. Mark the spots for the mounting screws, through the brace and onto the legs and apron, using a pencil. Remove the brace.

    • 3

Install a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the screws included in the corner brace kit, into a power drill. Drill pilot holes for the brace mounting screws.

    • 4

Postion the brace back into the corner on the table. Install a driver bit into the power drill. Install the mounting screws into the brace and table, using the power drill. Repeat this for the other three worktable legs.

    • 5

Measure the length of the worktable, from the left edge to the right edge, using a tape measure. Also measure from the top edge of the table, down to the rail that goes from leg to leg, if there is one.

    • 6

Use a circular saw to cut a piece of 3/4-inch plywood to the measured dimensions.

    • 7

Affix the plywood section to the worktable, with the plywood's top edge aligned with the table's top edge, to serve as a back for the table. Nail the plywood with a hammer.

    • 8

Position one side of the worktable against a wall, to further brace it.
