Removing Old Cast Iron Pipe Fittings

If your home is relatively old, then chances are good that it is outfitted with cast-iron piping. The piping probably is used for the home's sewage and water supply. Cast iron is durable, and it is that durability that can make it difficult to remove and replace. If you want to remove fittings from cast-iron pipe, then cutting through it is necessary.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 medium-size pipe wrenches

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the home's main water supply valve, and shut it off. Usually, the main water supply valve is in the basement.

    • 2

Wrap the blade of a chain cutter around the cast-iron pipe just below the fitting. Connect the end of the blade to the end of the cutter.

    • 3

Tighten the blade around the pipe using the hand tightener on the chain cutter.

    • 4

Attach the chain cutter's metal ratchet wrench to the hand tightener. The metal ratchet wrench is included with the chain cutter. Turn the wrench clockwise until the blade cuts through the pipe.

    • 5

Secure one medium-size pipe wrench to the fitting and another medium-size pipe wrench to the area just above the fitting.

    • 6

Pull the two pipe wrenches in opposite directions. This action will give you the leverage needed to unscrew the fitting.

    • 7

Bend the bottom pipe out of the way, and remove the fitting from the piping. If you can't bend the pipe out of the way, cut a section from the pipe a few inches below the first cut.
