A simple patch, sometimes called a dell patch, is used to help repair both the function and overall look of the concrete as it ages or develops cracks.   Undercut the edges of cracks that are more than a quarter-inch in width. This requires using a small sledge hammer and chisel to angle the crack so it is wider at the base than at the surface.

  Fill the crack with either masonry crack filler or a vinyl patching compound designed for use with concrete.

  Smooth with a putty knife or trowel. The patch should have a smooth, flat surface identical to the existing concrete.
