Does Tix Solder Contain Lead?

Lead-based product -- such as lead-based paint and solder -- can cause a wide array of potentially dangerous side effects. Nausea, fatigue, seizures, hearing loss and peripheral neuropathy are only a few of the health complications caused by lead poisoning. Unfortunately, lead is a common material in many products including solder. However, Tix solder does not contain lead.
  1. What Is Tix Solder?

    • Tix solder is used for joining (soldering) metal together. Tix solder has a bonding strength of up to 4,000 lbs. psi and can be used with rosin, flux, acid or chloride. Furthermore, Tix solder has electric conductivity, is fast drying, will not tarnish and is water-soluble to allow for easy clean up.

    Tix Solder Uses

    • Tix solder has a variety of using including repairs to jewelry, printed circuit boards, plumping and various other electrical items. Tix solder works with soldering guns, torches, irons or a soldering machine. Use one of the heating elements mentioned in the previous sentence to melt the Tix solder. This melted solder is then used to join two metals together.

    Does Tix solder contain Lead?

    • Tix solder is an indium-based solder, so it contains no lead. Indium is a soft and malleable metallic element. The “hardest soft solder” will melt at temperatures 150 degrees lower than lead-tin solders. Furthermore, Tix solder does not contain bismuth or silver and you can safely use it on gold, stainless steel, silver, platinum, pewter, alnico and various other alloys.

    Considerations

    • Before using Tix solder, always read and follow all the directions and warnings included with the solder. This will lower the chance of improper use of the Tix solder. Furthermore, take care not to touch the melted or hot solder with your skin, as it will leave unpleasant burns.
