Place an alligator clip lead on the generator field terminal and ground.
Hold a voltmeter on the generator load terminal and run the leads under the cowl of the regulator into the motor.
Turn on the Troy-Bilt generator and read the voltmeter. If there is a charge on the voltmeter, remove the alligator lead from the generator field terminal. Turn off the Troy-Bilt generator.
Place the alligator clip on the regulator field lead. Turn the generator back on and read the voltmeter. If there is a reading on the voltmeter, you'll need to replace the voltage regulator. Contact Troy-Bilt for assistance.
