How to Check the Voltage Regulator on a Troy-Bilt Generator

Troy-Bilt portable generators use a small gas engine to produce alternating current (AC) power. The generator can supplement electrical power for construction or lighting. If your Troy-Bilt generator does not seem to be working as expected, one potential problem is low power, which may be identified by troubleshooting the voltage regulator. Do not attempt to identify or troubleshoot your Troy-Bilt generator's voltage regulator if you are not confident in your ability to do so safely.

  Place an alligator clip lead on the generator field terminal and ground.

  Hold a voltmeter on the generator load terminal and run the leads under the cowl of the regulator into the motor.

  Turn on the Troy-Bilt generator and read the voltmeter. If there is a charge on the voltmeter, remove the alligator lead from the generator field terminal. Turn off the Troy-Bilt generator.

  Place the alligator clip on the regulator field lead. Turn the generator back on and read the voltmeter. If there is a reading on the voltmeter, you'll need to replace the voltage regulator. Contact Troy-Bilt for assistance.
