How to Repair a Laminate Credenza

A credenza is a piece of wood furniture generally used as a sideboard for food preparation in a homemaker’s kitchen. A laminate covering protects the wood finish of the credenza from heat, cuts and scratches. Laminate is made by placing adhesive between two sheets of plastic and applying heat and pressure until the layers bond into one piece. Repairing laminate is not difficult and doesn’t require special tools. It is necessary to exercise patience and attention to detail when repairing a laminate credenza.

Instructions

  1. Repair Loose Laminate

    • 1

Lift the loose laminate and gently separate it from the credenza surface. Stop lifting at the point where the laminate tightly adheres to the credenza.

    • 2

Scrape the backside of the laminate with a putty knife to remove loose debris, and use the most effective vacuum cleaner attachment available to clean out the debris.

    • 3

Press the laminate down onto the credenza and press an iron that is pre-heated on the cotton setting against the laminate. This reactivates the existing glue on the laminate, sealing it to the credenza.

    • 4

Repair stubborn laminate with glue that does not reactivate by applying a thin layer of contact cement to the underside of the laminate. Allow the cement to dry according to label directions, and press the laminate into place on the credenza. Hold the laminate down until the cement bonds.

    Repair Broken Laminate

    • 5

Take replacement laminate from an area of the credenza that is not visible. Make certain it is large enough to overlap the broken piece when placed on top of it.

    • 6

Measure the outline of the replacement laminate and use a carpenter’s square as a guide to score the outline of the piece with a sharp utility knife until the laminate is cut through.

    • 7

Heat an iron on the setting for cotton and press it to the laminate until it loosens. Peel the laminate free of the credenza.

    • 8

Lay the replacement laminate over the broken area and score its outline with a sharp utility knife until it cuts through the broken laminate.

    • 9

Spread a thin layer of contact cement on the underside of the replacement laminate and allow it to dry according to label directions.

    • 10

Press the replacement laminate into the broken area. Make certain it fits properly and press it into place to allow the glue to bond.
