How to Seam the Solid Surface in a Shower So It Won't Leak

Solid surfaces in the shower consist of the walls and the floor. In some cases, a line is present between the shower pan and tile walls. In other cases, a shower may have a plastic liner. Regardless of the type of solid surface in your shower, it’s important to seam the areas where they connect to prevent water from leaking through and damaging the subflooring and walls beneath.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe down the seams between the solid surfaces, using rubbing alcohol to remove soap scum, oil and dirt.

    • 2

Load a caulking gun with a tube of silicone caulk suitable for use in the shower. Cut off the tip of the caulk tube end, using a utility knife to make a 45-degree angle and make the hole slightly larger than the circumference of a straw. This gives you better control over the caulk flow.

Line up the caulk tube with the area on the solid shower surface you need to seam. Pull the trigger on the caulk gun as you pull it backward in a steady motion. Let go of the trigger once you reach the end of the line.

Wear a latex glove and run one finger along the line of caulk to create a tight bond between the two areas being seamed. Repeat the caulking process at each area of the shower where necessary and allow it to dry overnight before using.
