How to Replace the Drive Gear on a Craftsman Garage

A faulty drive gear within the door-opening unit of your Craftsman garage door will result in the immediate inability to open and close your garage door via its motorized functionality. You can immediately open up the door unit and remove the sprocket assembly, limit switch and motor unit in order to access and replace the drive gear on its shaft. While technical in nature, you can perform this operation yourself without professional assistance.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the garage door opener unit's power cord from the power outlet.

    • 2

Take off the cover from the garage door opener unit. This requires the removal of several screws using a Phillips head screwdriver.

    • 3

Find the white sprocket and gear assembly at the top of the motor unit once you have removed the cover. Use your Phillips head screwdriver to take out the three screws holding this assembly in place. Lift the assembly out of the top of the motor unit.

    • 4

Disengage the clip from the limit switch at the side of the unit by flipping the clip upward. Slide the edge of a flathead screwdriver under the clip to gain the appropriate leverage in order to flip the clip. Remove the gear beneath the clip, but take note of the position the switch was set in in relation to whether the garage door was opened or closed. This is important during reassembly.

Use your Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws holding the motor to the motor unit. Pull out the motor from the housing. This provides access to the drive gear.

    • 6

Slide the drive gear off the shaft below where the motor unit was seated. Slide the replacement drive gear into place.

    • 7

Follow your disassembly procedures in reverse to rebuild the unit. Ensure the limit switch is set in the same position as it was upon removal.
