How to Add Insulation Above a Dishwasher So That the Counter Will Not Buckle

Although dishwashers are time-saving devices in the kitchen, they can also sometimes cause damage to the counters above. That's because sometimes steam escapes from the diswasher cabinet and seeps into wood-based countertops, causing them to bend out of shape. You can help to remedy this problem by adding insulation underneath the dishwasher so the counter will not buckle.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the electricity for the dishwasher at the main circuit breaker. In most modern homes, the dishwasher will be installed on its own circuit. Move this switch to the "off" setting.

    • 2

Turn off the water supply for the dishwasher at the supply valve. Look underneath the nearest sink for the supply valve. Rotate the valve all the way to the right.

    • 3

Look underneath the dishwasher where it connects to the cabinet for the dishwasher brackets holding it in place. If you don't see the brackets at first, open up the dishwasher door to locate them.

    • 4

Loosen the screws holding the brackets in place with a screwdriver. Set the screws aside.

    • 5

Pull the dishwasher out of the opening beneath the cabinet. Have an assistant help you if the appliance is heavy.

    • 6

Measure the underneath side of the countertop with measuring tape and jot down the measurements. Transfer these measurements to a piece of soundproofing insulation mat. This type of mat will not only help protect the countertop, but will also help dampen dishwasher noises. Cut the mat to the required dimensions with scissors or a utility knife.

    • 7

Glue the mat in place underneath the countertop with adhesive or contact cement. Use weatherproof glue for the longest lasting seal. Press the mat in place and hold it until it sticks.

    • 8

Move the dishwasher back to the original location and secure it with the brackets.

    • 9

Restore the electricity and water supply to the dishwasher.
