How to Install an Adjustable Rough-in Toilet

The term rough-in toilet refers to the distance from the wall to the center of the waste disposal hole in the floor. The term also applies to the size of the toilet and whether it fits inside the available bathroom space. An inexperienced homeowner can install a rough-in toilet. The installation requires approximately a full day, the homeowner's total attention and patience, as well as the help of an assistant.

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Soil Pipe

    • 1

Push the soil pipe as far as it comfortably fits into the closet bend located at the base of the hole in the floor.

    • 2

Place the closet flange over the soil pipe. Measure the space between the bottom of the closet flange collar and the floor.

    • 3

Make a mark down from the top of the soil pipe to the space you just measured. Use a handsaw to cut off the top of the soil pipe. The closet flange collar must rest directly on the floor.

    • 4

Remove the soil pipe from the closet bend. Brush PVC primer on the top 2 inches of the inside of the closet bend and the outside 2 inches of one end of the soil pipe. Spread PVC cement on the primer-treated surfaces. Push the pipe into the closet bend while twisting to seat it firmly.

Install the Soil Pipe and Closet Flange

    • 5

Brush primer and then cement to the outside of the soil pipe and the inside of the closet flange. Fit the flange over the soil pipe, twist and press down on the flange until the collar rests evenly on the floor.

    • 6

Rotate the collar so the slots on each side are positioned on the right and left of the soil pipe parallel with the wall.

    • 7

Drive stainless steel screws through the screw holes in the collar into the sub-floor.

    Set the Toilet Bowl

    • 8

Slide the heads of the two brass closet bolts into the slots on each side of the flange collar with the threaded ends pointed up. Slip a brass washer over each bolt.

    • 9

Place the wax ring positioned flat side down over the flange and press it into position.

    • 10

Lift the toilet bowl over the closet flange. Line up the holes on each side of the bowl with the bolts protruding from the floor. Carefully lower it so it fits evenly onto the wax ring.

    • 11

Press straight down on the bowl with even pressure until it rests on the floor. Do not twist or rock the bowl during this procedure.

    • 12

Place a nylon washer over each brass bolt and tighten the nuts by hand. Carefully use a wrench to gradually tighten one nut one-quarter twist and then the other one-quarter twist. Continue to alternate between each side until firm resistance is encountered. Over tightening or uneven tightening will crack the bowl.

    • 13

Cut off the brass bolts two threads above the nut with a hacksaw. Press the plastic covers over the bolts.

    Install the Tank

    • 14

Insert the two rubber tank washers into the holes in the bottom of the tank by reaching inside the tank. Thread the tank bolts through the washers.

    • 15

Lower the tank so the spud washer seated on the bottom of the tank is positioned over the hole behind the toilet bowl. Align the two tank bolts with the holes on each side of where the spud washer connects.

    • 16

Place a nylon washer over the bolts. Tighten them by hand by placing a screwdriver in the slot-head on the bolt to hold them in position. Alternate from side to side while hand tightening to avoid uneven tightening, which could crack the tank.

    Install the Water Supply Line

    • 17

Bend the water supply line from the wall to the connection on the bottom of the tank. Attach it to the tank connection by slipping on the plastic nut, compression nut and compression ring onto the supply line.

    • 18

Place the supply tube into the outlet on the tank. Smear bonding paste onto the valve's outlet threads. Hand-tighten the plastic nut of the supply line and use a wrench to tighten the compression nut. Tighten the nut of the supply line under the tank.

    • 19

Connect the flapper chain inside the tank to the tank’s handle.

    • 20

Set the seat over the bowl. Insert the plastic bolts on the back of the seat and into the matching holes on the bowl. Tighten the nuts by hand.

    • 21

Turn on the water supply line fill the tank. Flush several times and check for leaks.
