How to Fix Holes in Vinyl

Vinyl's durability and flexibility make it an ideal choice for house siding, flooring and even clothing. If exposed to the hot sun or extreme cold for long periods of time, vinyl gets brittle and cracks. It is difficult to fully repair holes in vinyl, and in some cases, replacing the damaged vinyl is best. If you only need to fix a small hole, however, caulk or a vinyl patch allows you to do so.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Caulk

    • 1

Purchase caulk that matches the color of the vinyl you want to repair. If you cannot find color-matched caulk at a home repair store, look for it at a siding wholesale company.

    • 2

Wipe the vinyl clean with a damp cloth to remove all dirt and grime. Allow the area to dry.

    • 3

Cut the tip off the caulk nozzle. Squeeze the caulk tube to fill the hole. Take care not to spill caulk elsewhere on the vinyl.

    • 4

Allow the caulk to cure. This usually takes several days. Consult the caulk package for specific curing time.

    • 5

Trim away excess dried caulk with a razor blade.

    Patch

    • 6

Purchase a vinyl repair kit from a home repair store. These kits come with a vinyl patch, applicator and adhesive.

    • 7

Cut the patch twice as large as the hole. Cut off the edges to make a circle or oval shape.

    • 8

Remove any built-up dirt with a damp towel. If the vinyl was submerged in water, such as a pool liner, scrub away algae with a cloth dipped in rubbing alcohol. Rub fine-grain sandpaper over the area.

    • 9

Apply a thin line of adhesive around the edge of the patch.

    • 10

Align the patch with the hole. Press the patch against the vinyl. Hold the patch in place for 30 seconds to allow proper adherence.
