How to Replace the Blower Motor in a GE Profile Range Hood

If your GE Profile vent hood suddenly becomes noiser, or ceases to turn any longer, the problem most likely lies with the fan motor. The fan motor powers the blower that helps the vent hood do its job of cleaning the air. Replacing the blower motor isn't difficult and can be done by a DIYer with just a few tools.
  1. About GE Profile Vent Hoods

    • The main purpose of GE Profile vent hoods is to eliminate cooking vapors and odors, either by passing the air through a filter and cleaning it for recirculation in the kitchen, or by venting the air outside through ductwork. The Profile series of vent hoods come in a number of different models styles and materials, including stainless steel.

    Vent Blowers

    • The vent blower is mounted inside the hood, above where the air filter is positioned. The motor in a GE Profile vent hood operates on standard 120 volts of alternating current at 12 amps. The motor powers a fan that has the blades mounted facing upwards. This causes the blade to pull in air from underneath the vent hood surface as it operates.

    Accessing the Motor

    • To reach the motor for repairs, remove the filter screen on the underside of the hood. This screen is held in place typically by a series of clips at the side, or it may simply snap out of place, depending on the model. While the filter is removed, check it for wear and tear. Grease on the surface of filters can inhibit the fan operation. Follow your manufacturer's instructions to clean the filter or replace it. Many of the GE Profile filters are dishwasher safe.

    Blower Motor Replacement

    • Turn off the electrical supply to the vent hood at the main circuit breaker before starting work. Pull the motor's plug out of the socket. Loosen the screws holding the motor and fan assembly in place using a screwdriver. Loosen the screw holding the fan on the motor shaft and pull the fan off the shaft. Clean the fan, if needed, according to manufacturer's instructions. Slip the fan back onto the new motor shaft and secure it with the screw. Replace the motor in the vent hood and screw it into position before replacing the filter. Plug the motor back into its electrical socket, replace the filter screen and restore power at the main circuit breaker.
