Reglazing a Bathtub's Drain Cut

If the area surrounding your bathtub’s drain is starting to show wear and has stains you cannot remove, you might want to consider bathtub drain reglazing. With this project, you only apply refinishing glaze to the drain area. It’s not as extensive a project as reglazing the bathtub in its entirety. There are special kits available that contain all the components you need to complete the project. Before you begin reglazing a bathtub's drain, remove the drain from the bathtub to allow you access to the entire surface of the drain area.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a bathtub repair kit suitable for the bathtub you are repairing. Most kits contain repair compound, cleaning agents and fine-grit sandpaper as well as a protective finishing spray. If you have a colored bathtub, choose a repair kit that matches the color of the tub.

    • 2

Wipe off any loose pieces of ceramic or porcelain with a rag.

    • 3

Clean the bathtub thoroughly with a cleaning product suitable for the tub. Take care to remove all traces of bath oils and other greasy residue. Rinse the surface well and allow the tub to dry thoroughly.

    • 4

Mix the repair compound with the hardening agent that came in the repair kit. Follow package directions for the ratio of each product to use. Combine the two ingredients on a piece of scrap cardboard using a craft stick. Typically, the compound is ready to use when it is evenly colored.

    • 5

Spread the compound evenly on the area you are repairing around the drain. Feather the edges to blend in with the existing bathtub surface. Allow the compound to dry for the time recommended on the package.

    • 6

Sand the repaired drain area lightly with the piece of fine-grit sandpaper in the repair kit. Remove grit and dust from the tub’s surface with a tack cloth.

    • 7

Spray a light coat of finishing spray over the repaired area. Allow the spray time to dry following package recommendations. Spray a second and third light coat of finishing spray, allowing each coat time to dry.
