Wear gloves and safety goggles to protect your hands and eyes as you work with the garage door spring. A garage door spring is under a great deal of tension and can do a lot of damage if it snaps.
Open the garage door with the electric opener. Unplug the opener when the door is open.
Unhook the garage door from the opener on each side. Slide the garage door up as far as it goes and place locking pliers on the track on each side directly underneath the bottom of the door to hold it in place.
Unattach the safety cable from the garage door and release it from the attachment point at the door jamb.
Thread the cable through the pulley to free it from the pulley.
Unhook the old spring from its rear hook.
Repeat the process of removing the cable and spring from the other side of the garage door.
Remove the pulley from the end of the old spring to reuse with the new spring.
Attach the pulley to the new spring.
Hook the new spring onto the rear hook from which you removed the old spring.
Rethread the safety cable through the pulley at the end of the spring.
Attach the cable to its rear attachment point and feed it through the spring.
Thread the other end of the cable through the pulley.
Check for freedom of movement with the stud pulley located near the wall of the garage. The cable should move freely through this pulley.
Attach the cable to its attachment point on the track and the one near the door jamb.
Repeat to install the spring on the other side of the garage door.
Remove the locking pliers from the door track. Stay out from under the door to ensure your safety if it falls.
Test the door by lowering and raising it to ensure the springs and cables work properly.
Reopen the door and check the track to ensure the door is operating properly.
Adjust the door as needed. If the door won't stay down or is too difficult to pull down, lengthen the safety cable. If the door doesn't open far enough, shorten the cable. This is done by altering the connection point on the door track.
Reattach the arm that connects the garage door to the opener and plug the garage door opener in again.
