Help With Water Drainage on a Garage Floor

Garages are typically constructed with a floor drain to help prevent flooding. But if your garage was built without a drain, or if the drain clogs, water from a burst pipe or heavy rain can settle and flood your garage. Standing water can create an odor and trigger the growth of mildew. Preventing damage involves removing or draining water from the garage quickly.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the garage door and remove vehicles, bikes and other stored items. Opening the door will drain some of the standing water.

    • 2

Unclog the floor drain with a plumber's snake. Insert the snake down the drain and feel for resistance. Push the snake farther into the drain to help clear any clogs and facilitate water drainage.

    • 3

Use a squeegee to push water toward the garage door opening or floor drain. This tool is designed to move water around. Start near the back or edge of your garage.

    • 4

Remove any remaining water with a wet vac. This tool operates like a vacuum cleaner, but is designed to draw in water on floor surfaces.

    • 5

Place fans or a dehumidifier inside your garage to dry the floors and walls and remove excess moisture. Keep the garage door open to speed the drying process. Drying the floor and walls helps prevent the growth of mildew and mold.
