Are All Ceramic Mugs Heat-Resistant?

Ceramic mugs are popular for drinking coffee, hot chocolate, tea and other hot beverages. Ceramic mugs have a high tolerance for heat, so they don't break or melt. And they keep beverages warmer longer than other materials, such as plastic, paper or glass.
  1. Heat Resistance

    • All ceramic mugs are heat-resistant, but some are better than others. For example, an inferior quality mug is more likely to burn you if you pick it up when it's full of hot liquid. High quality ceramic mugs are designed to keep beverages hot for long periods while still being comfortable for you to hold.

    Insulating Capacity

    • Ceramic mugs have varying levels of insulating capacity. This refers to the mug's ability to retain heat and keep drinks warm. The chemical properties of ceramics create stronger bonds than the chemicals in metal and glass. These stronger bonds allow less heat to escape.

    Types of Ceramic Mugs

    • There are several types of ceramic mugs you can buy. Bistro mugs and coffee mugs are clay mugs typically used to serve hot beverages in coffee shops or taverns. Aside from the name, there is not much difference between the two, although some bistro mugs may be larger or have an unusual shape. Tea mugs are also quite similar; they are just called "tea mugs" because they are used primarily for tea. Most ceramic mugs hold about 12 to 20 ounces, but not espresso mugs -- they are much smaller. They are sized to hold a typical espresso shot, which is only 1.5 ounces.

    Other Options

    • Other materials are used to make hot beverage mugs. Stainless steel is often used for travel mugs because they're less likely to break when dropped, which makes them perfect for people on the go. Glass mugs are sometimes used in coffee shops for tea and coffee, but glass is usually too fragile for everyday coffee shop use. Disposable paper cups are typically used when people order hot beverages to go.
