How to Bond Plexiglas to Metal

Most craft or DIY projects require pieces to be joined together. Nails and screws are often appropriate, but sometimes the best tool for the job is some form of glue or adhesive. These substances vary widely in their characteristics, depending on the jobs they're designed to do. One of their most challenging jobs is joining two dissimilar materials, such as metal and Plexiglas. However, this is a requirement for furniture, boats and many other common items, and some adhesives have been designed for this purpose.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a sheet of fine sandpaper to rough up the edge of the Plexiglas that will be glued to the metal; this helps the adhesive form a bond with the Plexiglas.

    • 2

Sand the metal to remove any surface rust or other oxidation. Wipe the Plexiglas and the metal with a damp cloth and then dry it with a clean lint-free cloth.

    • 3

Squeeze equal amounts of epoxy from both tubes onto a paper plate or other disposable surface. Mix it thoroughly with a stick or coffee-stirrer.

    • 4

Spread a small amount of epoxy on both the metal and the Plexiglas. Allow the epoxy time to become tacky, if that step is specified in the instructions for the specific adhesive you're using.

    • 5

Press the Plexiglas and metal pieces together. Secure them in place with adjustable clamps to prevent them from moving until after the epoxy is fully cured, which may take up to 24 hours, depending on the brand.

    • 6

Remove the clamps from the glued area and continue with your project.
