How to Get a Plastic Bag Out of My Shower Drain

Sometimes bathtub drains become clogged with more than just hair, soap residue and the occasional children’s toy. Larger, pliable items -- including plastic bags -- can strangely make their way down your tub’s drain, sending some homeowners and apartment dwellers to contact a plumber. Set down your phone and attempt to remove the unusual clog from your drain before spending money needlessly on professional help. Everything you’ll need to pull the plastic bag from your drain is found in your closet and bathroom cabinet.

Instructions

    • 1

Bail out the tub’s standing water into a plastic bucket. Set a plunger on top of the drain and depress it three to five times. The vacuum helps draw the plastic bag toward the drain’s opening.

    • 2

Straighten a metal coat hanger, leaving the hook in place. Work the hook down the drain, rotating and manipulating it as you go until you grab the plastic bag.

    • 3

Pull the metal coat hanger slowly from the drain. If you drop the plastic bag, reinsert the coat hanger and try again.

    • 4

Run hot water down the drain for five minutes to break apart any foreign objects and hair that may have built up around the plastic bag.
