How to Caulk a Backsplash With No Gun

A backsplash serves an important purpose other than simply improving the appearance of a kitchen. It also protects the wall surface from water damage and stains. However, for proper protection to occur, the crack between the backsplash and the counter requires sealing with caulk. While caulk guns speed the process of caulking the backsplash, they are not required. You can create a professional appearance using nothing more than the caulk and your finger.

Things You'll Need

  • Degreasing cleaner
  • Cloth
  • Squeeze tube of silicone caulk
  • Scissors
  • Cup
  • Paper towel
  • Caulk tool (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Apply 1 to 2 tablespoons of a degreasing cleaner to a cloth and wipe the joint between the backsplash and the counter thoroughly to remove any grease or dust. Wait until the area dries completely before proceeding.

    • 2

Remove the cap from a squeeze tube of silicone-based caulk, which is best for water-prone areas such as a backsplash. You may want to choose a caulk that contains a mold inhibitor.

    • 3

Look at the tip for raised rings and cut through the one closest to the end with scissors to open the nozzle. Angle the cut at a 45 degree angle to assist with applying the bead smoothly.

    • 4

Walk to one end of the backsplash and place the tip of the caulk tube in the joint at the bottom of it. Squeeze the tube in a slow but continuous manner to apply a 1/4-inch-wide bead in the joint.

    • 5

Continue squeezing as you pull the caulk tube all the way down the length of the backsplash.

    • 6

Apply an additional bead of caulk down each vertical side of the backsplash and along the top edge if it does not extend all the way to the ceiling.

    • 7

Fill a cup half full of water and dip your index finger into it. Place your finger at one end of the caulk and draw it along the entire length of the bead to smooth out the bead and remove excess caulk. Wipe the excess caulk on a paper towel as needed.
