Instructions

    • 1

Extend the blind fully. Measure the length of the shade and its width. Purchase a new line that is double the length of the shade plus its width.

    • 2

Push the blinds to the top of the window. Open the bracket that holds the blinds in the window frame. Slide the blinds out of the bracket.

    • 3

Set the blinds on a table with the cord lock to your right. Pull the cord lock mechanism off to the right. Slide the top and bottom rails off the blinds to the left.

    • 4

Pull the string out of the blind fabric. Untie the washers from the string and disconnect the equalizer mechanism so you can reuse them. Discard the old string.

    • 5

Turn the cord guides at the top of the blind fabric 180 degrees. As the line pulls through these guides, it wears them down. While you are replacing the string, you might as well start with an unused side on the cord guide. Align each cord guide with the front and back edge of the blinds and place the guide’s opening inside the top hole in the shade.

    • 6

Thread the replacement line into a needle with a large eye. Insert the needle through the cord guide and down through the holes in one side of the blinds. Remove the needle. Tie one of the washers you removed in Step 4 to the end of the string on the bottom of the blind. The washer keeps the line from pulling back through the shade.

    • 7

Thread the other end of the line into the needle. Run this end through the other cord guide and down through the holes in the shade. Remove the needle and tie on a washer.

    • 8

Push the bottom rail back onto the shade. Take care not to snag the blind fabric as you reinstall the bottom rail.

    • 9

Direct the two replacement lines to the right side of the shade. Put the top rail back on the shade and be careful not to dislodge the cord guides.

    • 10

Hold the cord lock in your hand. Thread the line into the cord channel of the cord lock. Push the line through the bails and out the bottom of the cord lock. Push the cord lock firmly in place on the left end of the top rail.

    • 11

Slip the blinds back into their bracket and secure them. Open and close the shades to ensure the lines are working properly.

    • 12

Insert the ends of the line into the narrow end of the equalizer at the spot where the bottom of the blinds are when fully extended. Push the locking mechanism of the equalizer in place to hold the cords. Lower the shade.

    • 13

Run the ends of the line into the tassel. Tie a double knot to connect the lines with the tassel. Cut off any excess cord.
