How to Repair a Shower Massage

If your shower massage no longer works, a very simple fix could take care of the problem. The special valve that creates the pulsating effect may be too complicated to fix by hand, but you still can improve the flow of the shower head and return it to its normal working condition by cleaning the screen. Another solution fixes leaks, replacing the gaskets and tape on the shower pipe.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement gaskets
  • Teflon tape

Instructions

Turn the shower on briefly for about a minute and turn it off again. This loosens the sediment deposits on the shower head.

Rub your fingers over the surface of the shower head face to remove mineral deposits on the nozzles. Rub around the entire face of the shower head with your fingers, covering every single nozzle. Repeat as necessary until the shower flow rate returns to normal. If the flow rate does not return, continue to the next step.

Unscrew the shower head from your shower pipe extending out of the shower wall by turning the small nut at the base of the shower counterclockwise. Remove the round, rubber gasket from the shower head and install a new one. Replacement gaskets are available at a hardware store or plumbing supply outlet.

Take the screen out of the shower base and rinse it in water to get rid of accumulated debris and mineral deposits. Replace the screen.

Unwind the Teflon tape from the end of the shower pipe and discard it. Wrap new Teflon tape around the pipe threads. Cover all the threads for the best results. Place the shower head back on the pipe and screw it back into place by turning it clockwise.
