How to Seal Ducts With Vinyl Spray

A leak in your home or office duct system can prevent the whole thing from being effective. On top of that, a leak can result in increased energy costs due to the fact that the heating and cooling system has to work extra hard. One of the quickest ways to fix a duct leak is with a sealant spray. This aerosol spray is made up of a vinyl polymer that, when applied, hardens and closes the leak.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your heating or air and access the ducts in your home or office. They will be above the ceiling in an attic area.

    • 2

Locate the leak in the duct system. This is usually done by a professional because, most of the time, it requires special equipment. However, you can use an infrared camera to search for the leak.

    • 3

Point the camera at the duct system and take special notice of areas where leaks are likely to occur, such as at the joints and registers of the duct system. When your heat or air is on, you will be able to see the air leaking out of the duct system with the camera.

    • 4

Put on your safety mask and goggles.

    • 5

Hold the aerosol vinyl sealant can about 3 inches above the leak area and spray the sealant over the area.

    • 6

Coat the leak area with the sealant and allow it to dry.
