How to Repair a Vinyl Weatherguard

Vinyl with Weatherguard is a particular type of vinyl designed for exterior use. Weatherguard vinyl is often seen in locations that are subject to the elements for long periods of time, such as on awnings or outdoor dog kennels. The vinyl is durable, but will rip or get a hole from sharp objects or as it wears out over time. You can patch these holes yourself using vinyl of a similar grade.

Instructions

    • 1

Trim any stray fibers or rough edges around the spot that needs repairing. Do not take away a lot of the vinyl, just enough to create a neater edge. Use sharp scissors.

    • 2

Measure the tear or hole and add a 1/2 inch to the measurements.

    • 3

Cut a piece of heavy vinyl to fit the new measurements. Weatherguard vinyl is ideal but if you can't find it, use a heavy, exterior-grade vinyl.

    • 4

Apply a line of liquid, vinyl adhesive around the edge of the bottom side of the vinyl.

    • 5

Press the patch against the glue so the fabric is Weatherguard vinyl is sealed shut as much as possible.

    • 6

Tape the patch in place using painter's tape and leave it to cure for 24 hours, or as recommended on the adhesive's instructions.
