How to Troubleshoot a Tub Surround

Bathtubs are often surrounded by tile or a tub surround. Tub surrounds are made of plastic or acrylic and protect the concrete backer board the shower is installed on. Acrylic surrounds are sealed together using silicon caulk. Caulk prevents the surround from leaking, which can damage the wall and floor. A new shower surround can cost several hundred dollars. Repairs can be made to shower surrounds for less than 50 dollars in most cases.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the old caulk around the tub surround, looking for breaks or missing portions.

    • 2

Apply a caulk remover to the old caulk. Let it sit for the recommended amount of time indicated on the back of the packaging. Scrape the old caulk from the tub surround using a razor blade.

    • 3

Cut the end off a tube of caulk at a 45 degree angle. Place the caulk into a caulk gun. Press the trigger of the caulk gun to get the caulk flowing.

    • 4

Press the end of the caulk tube to the tub surround and apply a 1/4-inch bead of caulk along the surround joint.

    • 5

Wet your finger and press the caulk into the joint to make it smooth. Wipe away messy caulk using a wet rag.
