How to Replace a Sliding Glass Window Roller

A sliding glass window uses a roller on the bottom of the panel, much like a sliding glass patio door. When the window is difficult to slide open it is most likely due to bad bearings in the rollers. Replacing a sliding glass window roller involves removing the window panel from the window frame. It is best to order replacement rollers from the manufacturer of the window. Some home improvement centers carry a variety of window rollers.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the sliding glass window halfway. Grab each side of the window with your hands and lift the glass panel straight up into the top window frame track.

    • 2

Pull the bottom half of the window panel away from the window opening. Remove the window from the opening completely and place it on its top edge on the floor with the wheels facing you.

    • 3

Remove the screws securing the window roller mounting bracket with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the window rollers off the bottom edge of the window panel.

    • 4

Take the window rollers to a home improvement center to purchase replacements that match exactly if you cannot order them from the manufacturer. The mounting bracket must match exactly for the window to operate properly.

    • 5

Position the new roller brackets onto the bottom edge of the window panel, aligning the mounting holes with the holes in the window panel. Secure the mounting bracket to the window panel with the retaining screws.

    • 6

Apply one shot of spray graphite to the center bearings of each roller. Spin the rollers with your fingers to evenly distribute the graphite into all bearings.

    • 7

Pick up the window panel and insert the top of the panel into the top window frame track. Push the bottom half of the panel into the window frame and gently lower it into the lower track.
