How to Troubleshoot Salt Water Ionizers

A salt water ionizer is a device or system that uses electrolysis to separate water into alkaline and acid. Manufacturers and users of water ionization systems claim that the water helps restore your body's alkaline and acid balance and removes contaminants as well as increases energy and provides antioxidants to your body. In most systems, salt must be added to the system for it to operate properly. Although there are wide variances in size and complexity of water ionization systems, if your water ionizer is not operating properly, you can take several steps to try troubleshoot the problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure the power is plugged in and the system is turned to the "On" position.

    • 2

Add the required salt to the system, if you are required to do so manually. Commercial table salt will not work properly in the system. Sea salt is often used. However, refer to your manufacturer's instructions for which type of salt is recommended for your system.

    • 3

Run the system for at least an hour if it is new. Some systems require time for the electrolysis process to operate properly.

    • 4

Look for an error message. High=tech systems usually have a self-diagnostic component that provides you with a code when the system is not operating properly. Refer to your owner's manual for the code explanation.

    • 5

Push the reset button if the unit has one.

    • 6

Replace your filter. Many systems use a filter that needs to be replaced regularly. The lifespan of your filter will depend on the manufacturer and model.

    • 7

Check to ensure all hoses are attached properly to the system.
