My GE Dishwasher Flood Float Is Leaking

The float in your GE dishwasher is the device that controls how much water the dishwasher fills with when it first starts to work. A good float will literally float on the top of the water until it reaches a predetermined level, and then automatically close the water inlet valve that allows water to flow into the dishwasher. A float leak or a leak around the bottom of your dishwasher indicates a problem with this system.
  1. Broken Float Valve

    • Sometimes the water inlet valve itself can break. In this case, the float continues to float with the rising water, but the valve is stuck open and will not close. Water keeps pouring into the dishwasher until it starts to leak. You should be able to replace the inlet valve or the entire float assembly to solve this problem.

    Broken Float Switch

    • The valve in your GE dishwasher may be working properly, but this does not mean that the float itself is operating. A simple mechanical float may develop a leak or fail until it does not rise properly with the water level. The result is still a flooding dishwasher and the leaks that it creates. If the float can no longer switch the valve shut, you will need to purchase a new float to make it work again.

    Hose Problems

    • A hose underneath your dishwasher connects the water line to the water inlet valve that the float controls. This hose can wear out and eventually develop leaks. The leaks will appear at the bottom of your GE dishwasher just as if the dishwasher were flooding, but the problem is actually the water escaping before it even goes through the inlet valve. If the float appears to be functioning but the leak is still there, the problem could be upstream in a leaky hose that needs to be replaced.

    Gasket Issues

    • The gasket is the seal that goes around your entire dishwasher door and keeps any water from spilling out. The first few times you run your GE dishwasher, the gasket might leak a little, which is expected. But sudden, pooling leaks indicate that the seal may be damaged. This type of leaking can occur if the float fails and the dishwasher floods more water against the seal than the gasket is prepared to handle. You may need to replace the gasket to solve the problem.
