Tape That Won't Damage Carpet

Painter's Tape

• Painter's tape is designed for using to paint precise lines on walls or to protect surfaces that you don't want to paint, but it is also an ideal type of tape on carpets. Because of the tape's light adhesiveness, it will not damage the carpet when you pull up the tape. Painter's tape is available at home improvement stores and paint stores, and is often green or blue, making it useful for children's games.

Carpet-Safe Tape

• When shopping for tape safe for use on the carpet, look for tape labeled as "carpet safe." This style of tape is the kind that industrial renovators and painters often use, as they need to tape large, protective sheets to the walls and carpet. Carpet-safe tape is often very thick and typically clear.

Masking Tape

• Masking tape provides a light enough bond that it works well on carpet without causing damage. Because it is thin, it doesn't make an ideal type of tape to use for securing drop cloths while painting. Instead, its thin style makes it conducive to dividing a child's room or making lines for a game such as hopscotch on a carpeted floor.

Clear Tape

• Clear tape is available in many thicknesses, including thin styles suitable for wrapping presents and thick styles commonly used for sealing boxes. Clear tape leaves little residue on most surfaces, including carpet. It's not suitable to mark off an area for children or use for children's games because of its clear nature.
