My Genie Garage Door Will Not Close With the Wall Button

Genie garage door openers can be installed by professionals or by homeowners who want to do it themselves. The systems are designed to be opened or closed by either a wall button or a remote device usually kept in the car. Safety features include infrared sensors on the door that will prevent it from closing if it detects something in the path of the closing door. If the door is closing properly from the remote device but the wall button is not working, there are several possible explanations.
  1. Infrared Sensors

    • It is possible that the infrared sensors are picking something up and not allowing the door to close fully. If this is the case, one or both of the sensors will usually blink on and off. Check the path of the beams and make sure there are no objects or debris in the way. Even a few leaves or spider webs in the path of the beams can prevent the door from closing properly. If clearing the path does not work, unplug and re-plug the system. This resets the sensors.

    Motor Issues

    • If the motor runs when you push the button, but the door does not move, the door might be disengaged. You will need to re-engage the carriage. The method of doing this varies from model to model, so check your owner’s manual before you actually make any changes to the system. If you hear a grinding noise when you press the button, there is likely a problem in the gear assembly that will need to be professionally repaired or replaced. Also check to see whether the motor protector is open. If it is, close it and wait 20 minutes for the system to reset.

    Power Flow

    • Another reason the button may not be working is that the fuse or circuit breaker for it may have blown or been tripped. Check the fuse or breaker and replace or reset as necessary. If the fuse or breaker blows or trips frequently or specifically when power in another part of the house is being used, contact an electrician about having the garage door opener moved to another circuit that can take the power drain without tripping.

    Wiring

    • Finally, the wiring to the wall button may be bad. There could be a broken or damaged wire, or the contacts in either the button or door system may not be working. Contact a repair professional familiar with the Genie brand or an electrician to have the wiring checked and replaced or repaired if necessary.
