Cut the tip of the silicone caulk with a utility knife. Insert a nail into the center of the caulk tip and pierce the foil covering. Install the caulk tube into your caulk gun.
Open one window and set a box fan inside the window frame. Close the window against the fan to hold the fan in place. Close all other windows in your home. Turn the box fan to the “High” speed setting. This pressurizes the house, and as the air fills the home, you are able to see and feel drafts in the attic.
Go into the attic with a flashlight, and close the attic stair doors behind you. Look first for areas that allow light through the floor. Look around pipes, vents, ducts and wall studs for small specks of light.
Apply a bead of caulk with the caulk gun anywhere you see light shining through the attic floor. Shine your flashlight to illuminate the attic as you walk, or turn on the attic light once you find areas where light shines through the floor.
Feel around vent pipes and ducts with your hand. If you feel air blowing between the seams, fill the areas with caulk.
Take the silicone caulk out of the gun and insert a high-temperature caulk. Apply the high-temperature caulk to seams in furnace vent pipes and where the pipes come through the attic floor.
