How to Adjust the Valve Clearance on the Generac 00523-1 Generator

The Generac 005230-1 generator is a standby model that requires occasional valve adjustment to ensure proper engine air intake is achieved. Valve clearance adjustments can be made via the rocker arms beneath the generator's valve cover. You can make these adjustments and keep your Generac generator running efficiently even if you have never attempted valve adjustment previously.

Instructions

    • 1

Look along the side of the generator's engine for the iron valve cover. This will be positioned adjacent to the engine's carburetor. Remove the bolts securing the iron valve cover with a socket wrench. Set the cover aside.

    • 2

Use a Torx screwdriver to loosen the screw at the center of the bolt on the top rocker arm that lies beneath the valve cover.

    • 3

Slide a feeler gauge under the left side of the generator's top rocker arm. Loosen the rocker arm's bolt with your socket wrench if you cannot fit the gauge under the rocker arm. Loosen the bolt only enough so that you can barely fit the gauge under the arm. You will need to tighten the bolt slightly if the gauge can be freely wiggled around after being placed under the arm.

    • 4

Use your screwdriver to re-tighten the top rocker arm's Torx screw.

    • 5

Repeat this procedure on the Generac's lower rocker arm to properly adjust the valve clearance.

    • 6

Secure the valve cover in place by reinserting its bolts with your socket wrench.
