Ways to Drain a Humidifier

A humidifier is used to moisten the air in a house. This type of unit needs to be emptied often to prevent bacteria from growing. The frequency you should drain your humidifier will vary based on the manufacturer's instructions. Regardless of the frequency, there’s usually one basic way to drain a humidifier. The unit has a removable plastic bucket, explains the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Drain it by using a hose to draw the water out of the unit and into a drain.
  1. Humidifier Draining Location

    • Select a location that works best for draining a humidifier. A floor drain is easiest. However, if you don’t have a floor drain in your home, an alternative location is a sink or laundry room washer drain. When looking for a drain, make sure a hose can be placed above the drain opening, rather than at the same level. This allows the water to flow from the drain easier.

    Attaching the Hose

    • Determine whether your hose has a nipple attachment. If it doesn’t, buy an attachment at a home improvement store. Without the attachment, you won’t be able to drain the humidifier properly. Attach the hose to the humidifier by finding the hose attachment hole. If the connection isn’t sealing properly, purchase a sealing component from your local home improvement store. A proper seal is important in preventing leaks. Run the hose from the humidifier unit to the selected drain.

    Drain the Humidifier

    • Open the humidifier water bucket. This is where the water is stored. Pore about a gallon of fresh drain water into the drain bucket. What this does is push the water through the hose. After you empty the fresh water into the humidifier, check your draining location, ensuring the water is emptying into the drain.

    Trouble Shooting

    • If water isn’t emptying from your humidifier, check the hose. Look for kinks, and straighten the hose as much as possible. After fixing the hose, examine the humidifier again to make sure it’s draining. If you’re still having problems, check the hose seal. It should be airtight. No water should be escaping. If you haven’t used a sealing component on the hose, purchase the item to create a stronger seal.
