What Is a Strait Laser Level?

Function

• Strait line levels are used to install shelving, light fixtures and ceiling fans. They are also used in commercial settings to check door and window heights, tiling, flooring and to hang kitchen cabinets. However, strait line laser levels are not ideal for outdoor use, or for installing objects on contoured, sloped or elevated surfaces. Because the laser is projected as a single line and points in one direction, it functions best on flat surfaces or workspaces.

Features

• In addition to creating laser lines, strait laser levels also feature dual-bubble vials. The vials allow users to position objects both vertically and horizontally. Other levels include a third bubble vial for wrap-around projection. These readings emit a laser line around corners and angles, and along two-wall layouts. Additionally, some strait laser levels feature laser lines that rotate along a 360-degree angle within a 30-foot work area. Control settings allow you to adjust the location and length of the laser beam along surfaces.

Advantages

• Strait laser levels project beams ranging from 15 to 60 feet in length. This avoids the need to slide the level up or down a wall, which increases the chances for error. These instruments can also be handled manually; placed on desks and ladders; or mounted to jamb-poles or floor-to-ceiling laser platforms.

Considerations

• Adhesive strips are recommended for mounting strait laser levels onto most surfaces. Remove any dust or moisture from the surface before applying the strips. Pushpins may also work in lieu of adhesive strips. Prior to using the level, calibrate by using the leveling pins to center the bubble between the two lines or markings on the vial.

Warnings

• Follow the manufacturer's instructions when using strait laser levels. The laser beam contains radiation levels that can be harmful when shined directly into the eyes. Wear protective safety glasses or goggles for protection against excessive exposure while working. Likewise, avoid pointing the laser beam at other people or shining it against reflective surfaces. Also, do not use the level against surfaces that emit strong vibrations or extreme heat.
