How to Mount a Light on a Cinder Block

Mounting lights on a cinder block wall requires special fasteners to ensure a secure hold. This is especially true of lights that mount near doorways where there is vibration from a closing door. When mounting a light on a cinder block wall, it is necessary to use short metal shield anchors designed for smaller screws. These anchors bite into the cinder block to provide a tight installation. Metal shield anchors are available at home improvement centers along with the screws that go into the anchors.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the mounting plate of your light fixture over the electric junction box and against the cinder block wall. The back of the fixture should be flat against the cinder block.

    • 2

Mark the mounting hole locations for the light fixture mounting plate with a pencil. Make the mark as dark as possible so you can readily see it on the rough texture of the cinder block. Take the fixture off the wall.

    • 3

Insert a masonry bit into your drill slightly smaller in diameter than the metal shield anchor. Drill through the cinder block wall at your mounting hole marks.

    • 4

Insert the metal shield anchor into the holes, tapping them with a hammer until the top of the shield is against the cinder block.

    • 5

Attach the wires from the fixture to the house wires according to the manufacturer's instructions. Once you connect the wires, position the light fixture mounting plate onto the wall.

    • 6

Insert the retaining screws through the mounting plate and into the metal shield anchors. Tighten the screws with a Phillips screwdriver or nut driver, depending on the type of screw head. Only tighten until the screw head makes contact with the mounting plate. Do not tighten too much.
