Take the lid off the top of the tank. Find the water shut-off valve behind the toilet bowl, next to the wall. Turn the handle clockwise to shut off water to the tank. Push and hold the flush handle down until most of the water drains from the tank. Soak up any remaining water in the tank with towels.
Unscrew the water supply line under the tank where it connects to the tank fill valve. It might be necessary to use a pair of pliers to begin turning the water supply line if there is sediment around the connection.
Lift the end of the fill tube off the top of the flush valve. The rubber fill tube simply uses a metal clip to secure to the flush valve. Turn the nut below the tank securing the fill valve counter-clockwise with an adjustable wrench. Once you remove the nut, pull the fill valve out of the tank.
Unhook the end of the flapper chain from the toilet handle. Grab the two ears of the flapper where they connect to the tabs on the side of the flush valve. Pull the ears off the tabs and remove the flapper from the tank.
Insert the flush valve removal tool into the flush valve hole. Line up the cross-hairs of the flush valve hole with the notches on the tool. Attach a 3/8-inch drive socket extension onto a socket wrench and insert it into the center of the flush valve tool. Turn the flush valve tool counterclockwise with the socket wrench. The flush valve tool turns the flush valve and unthreads it from the bottom of the toilet tank. Pull the flush valve out of the tank.
Take the old parts to a home improvement center to plumbing supply store to purchase matching replacements. Clean the bottom of the toilet tank with a damp rag to remove any sediment and slime buildup. This helps ensure a tight seal when replacing the parts.
Insert the new flush valve into the flush hole in the bottom of the tank. Turn the flush valve clockwise to thread the valve into place. Tighten the flush valve fully with the flush valve wrench. The flush tube should point toward the back of the tank.
Push the ears of the new flapper over the tabs of the flush valve. Hook the end of the flapper chain onto the end of the flush handle. The chain has an “S” hook that inserts through one of the holes on the end of the flush handle.
Insert the new fill valve into the hole on the left bottom of the tank. Thread the securing nut over the exposed threads under the toilet tank. Tighten the securing nut with the adjustable wrench. Clip the end of the water tube onto the top of the flush valve overflow tube.
Thread the water supply line onto the end of the fill valve under the toilet tank. Tighten the connection with a pair of pliers.
Turn the water supply valve counter-clockwise to supply water to the toilet. Look for leaks around the fill valve. Tighten the securing nut another 1/4 turn if a leak is present. Place the tank lid back onto the tank.
