How to Repaint Galvanized Metal Flashing

Metal flashing around windows, roof lines and other areas that require protection from moisture begins to look shabby as the paint peels. Galvanized metal flashing is typically painted to match the surrounding materials so it's rendered nearly invisible. Eventually, the paint begins to peel or flake, which results in a poor appearance. Repainting the flashing is no different than painting other exterior surfaces, although it does require some preparation before you begin, to ensure the paint adheres properly.

Things You'll Need

  • Paint solvent
  • Wire brush
  • Degreaser
  • Cloths
  • Latex metal primer
  • Brush or paint roller
  • Latex exterior paint

Instructions

    • 1

Scrub the flashing with a paint solvent and a stiff wire brush. Apply the solvent following the instructions and precautions on the package label, and use a solvent specifically formulated for use on metal. Rinse thoroughly after paint removal, using a hose and sprayer.

    • 2

Apply a degreasing cleaner to the metal, using a soft cloth, and allow it to set for the time recommended on the label. Then rinse the degreaser off the metal to remove any remaining residue from the surface. Allow the metal to air-dry thoroughly before proceeding.

    • 3

Paint a metal latex primer onto the entire flashing surface, using a brush or roller. Alternatively, use a spray-on metal primer. Hold the spray nozzle 8 inches from the metal surface and apply the spray in a thin, even coat.

Brush or roll on a thin coat of outdoor latex paint in the desired color, after the primer coat has dried. Allow the first coat to dry for 4 to 6 hours, then apply a second coat of latex paint.
