How to Resurface a Stone Basement Wall

Many older homes have stone walls in the basement that can crumble and come apart as time goes on. One option is to cover the wall up with drywall, but that does not repair the surface. The wall itself can be repaired with concrete and a little elbow grease. If you are concerned about the structural integrity of the wall itself, consult a contractor or structural engineer before attempting to repair the wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a dust brush to wipe the wall clean of dust and debris. A hose can be used to wash it down, if the wall is very dirty. If you are at risk of having a lot of the stone or mortar crumble, however, avoid this step.

    • 2

Mix up enough quick-setting cement with water in a wheelbarrow or plastic tub. Use a shovel or hoe to mix the concrete.

    • 3

Load a metal trowel up with the concrete and apply a thick coat to the wall, starting at the center and working your way out.

    • 4

Push the concrete into the cracks and crevices more heavily as needed. Smooth out the coating as you work so that you are leveling it out and making a complete surface. It is up to you if you want the stones to show or not.

    • 5

Dampen the wall with a fine spray from a misting hose attachment or hand-held spray bottle three or four times a day for three days, as the concrete cures. Concrete that is not sprayed occasionally can dry too fast and crack.

    • 6

Touch up as needed after the concrete cures.
