How to Get Drawer Glides to Close Evenly

Over time, your once smooth drawer glides might begin to stick, making it difficult to open or close the drawer. This friction, which is caused by a build-up of dirt, debris and grime, may even cause damage to the drawer itself and the contents inside. Save your drawers from imminent damage by lubricating the drawer slides at home. There are inexpensive products available to lubricate drawer gliders constructed from wood or metal.

Instructions

  1. Wood Drawer Glides

    • 1

Pull the drawer as far out as it will go. Remove the bulkier items from the drawer and place them into an alternate storage area. Wipe down the drawer glides with a damp cloth and allow them to dry completely before continuing.

    • 2

Slip on a pair of sturdy work gloves and soften a chunk of paraffin wax with a blow dryer or heat gun. Do not allow the wax to begin dripping excessively.

    • 3

Rub the drawer glides with the paraffin wax. Open and close the dresser drawers five to six times to evenly distribute the paraffin wax over the gliders.

    • 4

Replace the contents of the drawer and shut it.

    Metal Drawer Glides

    • 5

Pull the drawer as far out as it will go. Remove the bulkier items from the drawer and place them into an alternate storage area. Wipe down the drawer glides with a damp cloth and allow them to dry completely before continuing.

    • 6

Spray a rag with automotive lubricant and rub it across the length of both gliders. While the lubricant is still moist, open and shut the drawer at least five times to evenly distribute it over the glider.

    • 7

Examine the glider and surface of the drawer and wipe away any stray lubricant before replacing the drawer’s items and shutting the drawer.
