Getting Scratches Out of a Whirlpool Stainless Fridge

Your gleaming stainless steel Whirlpool refrigerator is attractive and trendy, but a scratch can detract from its sleek look. With all the action that kitchens typically see, especially in a household with active children and pets, scratches will happen. However, it's possible to remove scratches from your fridge using common items you may already have around the house.

Things You'll Need

  • Clean, lint-free cloth
  • Olive oil
  • Water
  • 400-grit sandpaper
  • 600-grit sandpaper

Instructions

    • 1

Dab olive oil onto the scratch with a soft, lint-free cloth. Lightly rub the scratch with a circular motion. Very light scratches may be rendered nearly unnoticeable with this common cleaning method.

    • 2

Examine the surface of the fridge to determine whether there is a grain. Some Whirlpool surfaces have an identifiable grain. When working on the scratches, you will need to go with the grain.

    • 3

Use a very fine 600-grit sandpaper and apply a sanding fluid (you can use water or a light cooking oil) to it. Test an inconspicuous part of the surface by running the sandpaper over a small section of it. Make sure that the sandpaper makes only a slight mark in the finish as a starting point.

    • 4

Sand the scratched area of the refrigerator. Sand the area until you determine that the scratches are smoothing out. If you need a rougher grit, move to 400-grit sandpaper.

    • 5

Check the scratched area frequently to determine when it is smooth enough to stop. Sand the rest of the panel of the fridge to match the sanded area.

    • 6

Clean all the surfaces you sanded. Use a soft cloth treated with stainless steel cleaner specifically for appliances, or try a less expensive, non-toxic approach using olive oil, vinegar and water, or baby oil on a clean, soft cloth.
