How to Repair a Resin Filler Crack on Travertine Tile

Travertine is a strong stone formed from deposits of calcium carbonate found by streams and river beds. Epoxy resins can be used to fix both superficial and major cracks and breakage in travertine tiles. However, improper cleaning and care of the repair site can cause cracks in the resin itself, leading many to start from scratch. Instead of replacing the resin, you can fix the crack yourself to create a strong, seamless final appearance. It's extremely important, for safety reasons, to wear rubber gloves and a respirator while working with the travertine resin.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the resin repair with a mild stone cleaner formulated for use on travertine. Dilute the concentrated cleaner according to the package directions and remove any dust, dirt or grime from the repair site.

    • 2

Dry the resin repair site with a microfiber cloth. Combine the tinted travertine resin according to the package directions in a plastic bowl. This generally involves mixing a clear epoxy with a tinted product until a suitable color match is created.

    • 3

Dip the end of a toothpick into the resin and scrape it across the crack, paying attention to avoid smearing the product on the tile surrounding the damaged area.

    • 4

Allow the resin to cure according to the package directions. Remove any excess resin with a razor blade. Holding the blade at a 30-degree angle, carefully scrape it across the resin crack repair to remove the excess product.
