How to Clean Toilet Vents

A clogged toilet isn't always the result of something lodged inside the toilet. Toilet pipes also travel upwards to the roof, and these roof pipes allow gasses to leave the house. Toilet vent pipes on the roof can clog, resulting in flushing problems or overflowing. Rather than call a plumber, you can correct this problem yourself by cleaning the toilet vent.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the location of your toilet vent. These vents are on the roof, typically in the area above your bathroom. Examine your roof from the ground and look for a metal or white pipe.

    • 2

Use a ladder to climb onto the roof. Have someone on the ground hold the ladder as you climb on the roof. Bring a plumber's snake, a flashlight and a water hose with you. Wear shoes with a rubber sole to prevent slipping on the ladder and roof.

    • 3

Shine the flashlight into the toilet vent pipe to look for debris, such as leaves, or dead animals clogging the vent pipe.

    • 4

Use the plumber's snake to dislodge and remove any debris or objects clogging the pipe.

    • 5

If you're unable to dislodge or remove the clog with a snake, stick the water hose down the pipe and ask your helper to turn on the water. The force of the water will help dislodge and clear the item clogging the pipe.
