How to Remove a Yale Cylinder Core With a Core Puller Key

Yale makes the process of rekeying locks a quick process with a removable core. The removable cylinder core does not require disassembly of the lock. But it does require a core puller key to turn the cylinder and unlock the retaining tab. The core puller key is longer than your regular key. The end of the key reaches the back of the cylinder to disengage the core from the lock. Core puller keys are available from Yale and some locksmith supply shops.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the door that contains the Yale cylinder core you want to remove. Once you remove the core, you do not want to turn the handle of the door until you reinstall the cylinder core.

    • 2

Insert the core puller key into the Yale cylinder. The key must insert until the entire length of the key is in the core.

    • 3

Turn the key to the right a quarter turn until it stops. This disengages the locking tab on the side of the core. Hold the key in this position and slowly pull the cylinder core out of the lock. Hold your hand under the cylinder as you pull it out to catch the lock pins.
